Abby asked for a guided tour the next morning, after their breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon. One advantage to spending so much time at his grandmother’s house was that he had stocked the fridge.

“Oh, wow,” she breathed when they came to the sun room at the top of the stairs. It was a small, semi-circular room with bay windows wrapping around the front. There was no door, so it was completely open to maximize the light. “This is perfect.”

Will glanced at the old sewing machine. Sewing baskets were scattered everywhere, and a scrap of soft pink fabric was still positioned under the needle. The shelves were stacked with rolls and squares of fabric his grandmother had picked up when she went into town. She loved to sew everything from clothes to bedding and tablecloths.

Abby went to the window and looked down. From his vantage point, Will saw the spring-fed lake he used to swim in as a kid. The surface of the water glittered as if thousands of diamonds floated on top, and the huge trees bordering the property swayed gently in the early morning breeze.

Abby turned to him, extracting a folded slip of paper from her pocket. “I hope you won’t take this the wrong way, Will.” Handing him the check, she said, “I’m offering you full asking price. I’d love to buy this house.”

His hands trembled as he looked at the check. It was a huge sum of money, but he suddenly realized the house wasn’t for sale. Handing it back, he said, “I can’t take this. I’m sorry.”

A hint of disappointment flashed in her eyes before she schooled her expression and turned back toward the window. “I understand. When I emailed Lauren to tell her I was coming back, I told her I needed to buy a house with an art studio. I wanted something remote. She sent me the listing for this place, and I fell in love with it right away.”

Will slipped his arms around her waist as they looked out the window together. “This would be your art studio?” He thought about all of the hours his grandmother had spent in there. It was her favorite room in the house. He could imagine Abby breathing new life into it with her paints and canvases. His grandmother would have loved that. She had a deep appreciation for creative souls.

“Yes.” She glided a fingertip over the painted white window casement.

The house was old, and the moldings were substantial. They’d been painted white at some point. Will knew stripping them would be a lot of hard work, but he suddenly looked forward to reviving the house Abby seemed to love as much as he did.

“Will you help me look for something else?” she asked. “Something just like this?”

“No.” He tried to hide his smile as he kissed her cheek. He saw her frown, but she said nothing. “You won’t need to look for another place, unless you’d like to live somewhere else during the renovation. I’m
